One widespread tale, which has been disproved, is that the Maine Coon is the byproduct of a semi wild, domestic cat and a raccoon. This myth, which has long been fueled by the cat’s bushy tale and raccoon-like coloring, is the reason for the name “Maine Coon.”
Another theory commonly associated with the emergence of the largest domestic cat breed is that the Maine Coon came from the six cats sent to Wiscasset, Maine by Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. While this theory has never been completely disregarded, the most commonly accepted belief today is that the Maine Coon breed is the offspring of shorthaired domestic cats and overseas longhairs. The Maine Coon is known for being the largest domestic cat breed. Indeed, a widespread legend is that the Maine Coon is over 30 pounds! This is untrue (unless the cat is morbidly obese), but this large domestic cat is very tall and muscular with big bones. The male cat typically weight between 13 to 18 pounds, while the female weighs 9 to 12 pounds. With the addition of the cat’s thick coat of fur, it is no wonder that it is known for being the largest domestic cat breed!

I'd read that the largest domestic cat breed was the Ragdoll, which, even as a female, can easily average 20 pounds. Is that mistaken?
Most of the sites I've visited says the maine coon is the largest. It's even at Guinness World Records, but for the "longest cat" record though. It measures 48 inches and weighs 35 pounds. That was in 2006, I'm not sure if the record still holds today.

The cat pictured here is not a Maine Coon, it is a Scottish Fold.
Our Weegie is 18 pounds, she's a beautiful tuxedo marked, definitely not chubby girl. Her sister was a normal sized tabby. So I disagree with the average weight of the breed here. Our males reached 25 pounds. The new world record as of yesterday is a 48 1/2 inch, he weighs about 35 pounds. None of our cats got overweight, they were just BIG. and beautiful, kitties.
Have you heard of NORA the piano cat?I have her twin SMOKEY...Pics on my profile..He is a 30# Gray bullseye tabby...He is 7 now..I got him at 8 weeks...Hurts my back to lift him...It;s like lifting a #10and#20 bags of patatoes together...Imagine that one...Weighed 11# at 6 months-#18 at 18 mo.22.5"around the chest 12.5" neck He won't let me stretch him out to see how long he is...The pic of me and him in my profile tells how long he is Guess 45 to 50"Best of all''HE WON"T LEAVE MY SIDE....He really NO JOKE Starred down a 5 point Buck Deer at 2 years old..That was his first smell of another animal..He is a strictly indoor cat..He got loose once outside and sent me to the ER trying to get him back inside..Shredded my shirt and blood every where..The ER laghed untill I should them a Picture of him And I together...Holding him he stretches to my Knees....They put me on antibiotics and tetnus....Most people would say get rid of him,but would you get rid of your KID...No..Because I Love him more than any human alive....
